Road Departure Mitigation System (RDM) – Honda Safety Tech
What is Honda’s Road Departure Mitigation System (RDM)?
Honda’s Sensing suite of safety technology was designed and developed to keep you safer while driving. One problem in particular Honda is focusing on is distracted driving, as it has recently surpassed impaired driving in fatalities across parts of Canada. To combat this Honda has introduced the Road Departure Mitigation System (RDM). RDM uses a forward facing mounted camera to detect the road markings on the road in front of you. If RDM detects your vehicle drifting into the other lane without activating your turn signal, the system will firstly provide an audible warning and vibrate the steering wheel to alert you that you are drifting out of your designated lane. If the driver continues to drift into the other lane without correcting, RDM can take control of steering to safely bring the vehicle back onto the road and into its original lane. It’s important to note that the system will only operate between speeds of 72-145 km/h.

How Does Honda’s Road Departure Mitigation System (RDM) Work?

Setting up and enabling your RDM system will vary depending on the year and model of Honda that you own. On all Honda’s 2019 or newer you activate the system using steering wheel mounted commands. Here is a video from Honda Canada explaining RDM in detail and how to activate the system on new Honda models. For more information on how to activate your RDM system on older models (2018 or older) refer to your owners manual, or contact one of our product specialists who’d be happy to walk you through the process.

How Does Honda’s Road Departure Mitigation System (RDM) Work with Other Honda Safety Features?
Honda’s Road Departure Mitigation System (RDM) works hand in hand with the Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) to safely keep you in your lane and on the road. While both of these safety systems work by keeping you in your lane, they have differences. The main difference between these two systems is that the Road Departure Mitigation System (RDM) does not need to be reactivated every time you turn on the vehicle. Once RDM is activated it stays on and does not require driver input. LKAS on the other hand is designed to be activated and deactivated more often as you drive. LKAS will also deactivate if it does not consistently receive any driving input (no hands on the steering wheel). A good way to think of this is that RDM is a passive safety system that you can set and forget, while LKAS is an active safety system that requires your input to see the full benefit of.
