4 Things the Honda Accord Does Better Than the Toyota Camry

The Honda Accord and Toyota Camry have consistently been two of the best mid-sized sedans since their introduction in the late 70s and early 80s. While things like styling, drive feel and vehicle looks can be subjective, here are 4 objective ways the 2022 Honda Accord outperforms its top competitor: the 2022 Toyota Camry.

Spaciousness and Comfort

Despite the Camry having an almost identical vehicle length to Honda’s mid-size sedan, the Accord offers more room for customers and cargo across the board. The most glaring difference is in trunk volume where the Accord offers an additional 1.6 cubic feet of additional storage space, which can make the difference of being able to fit in a hockey/golf bag or not.

The Accord also offers 2 additional inches of legroom for rear passengers which makes every trip no matter the length more comfortable. Check out the full cargo and passenger space comparison below:

Category 2022 Honda Accord 2022 Toyota Camry
Trunk Cargo Volume 16.7 Cubic Feet 15.1 Cubic Feet
Passenger Volume 105.6 Cubic Feet 100.4 Cubic Feet
Front Row Head Room 39.5 inches 38.3 inches
Front Row Shoulder Room 58.3 inches 57.7 inches
Front Row Leg Room 42.3 inches 42.1 inches
2nd Row Head Room 37.3 inches 38 inches
2nd Row Shoulder Room 56.5 inches 55.7 inches
2nd Row Leg Room 40.4 inches 38.0 inches

Fuel Economy

Both the Camry and Accord offer some of the best fuel efficiency numbers in the mid-sized sedan segment. However, the Accord slightly edges out the Camry in both the base engine and upgraded engine option.

The Accord’s better fuel numbers can be directly related to the Accord’s turbo engine options that are smaller in size but produce similar horsepower and superior torque compared to the Camry’s engine options. The difference in fuel efficiency is around 0.4L/100 km or a 1 MPG difference, which doesn’t sound like much but can be the difference of hundreds or even thousands of dollars in fuel savings over the lifespan of the vehicle and drastically affects the overall cost of ownership.

Cost of Ownership

The true cost of ownership covers all of the expected costs of owning your vehicle during the 1st 5 years of ownership. This includes the initial vehicle price, fuel costs, depreciation, financing and insurance costs as well as maintenance. Despite having a slightly higher purchase price, the Honda Accord offers a lower cost of ownership when compared to the Toyota Camry. In particular, the Honda depreciates less, has lower fuel costs and costs less to insure when compared to the Camry.

Safety and Convenience Features

Arguably the biggest difference between the Camry and Accord is the large difference in features across all trims. The Honda has an advantage in most trims but the most popular fully loaded comparison is where the Honda Accord Touring really separates itself from the Toyota Camry XSE. All of the following features are exclusive to the Accord and not offered with the Camry XSE:

  • Rear Cross-traffic Monitor
  • Heated Rear Seats
  • Memory Seats
  • Navigation System
  • Wifi HotSpot
  • Remote Start
  • Rain Sensing Wipers

Considering how close the Accord Touring and Camry XSE are in their purchase price, the value of these extra features makes the Accord the clear winner in value.
