Accord Touring VS Accord Hybrid: The Differences

I wanted to take a few moments to talk to you about the Accord Hybrid. The 2017 Accord Hybrid Sedan, was re-introduced for the 2017 Model year. Like the Accord V6 Touring, It now comes equipped with the Honda Sensing Technologies, Push Button Start with Smart Entry w/Remote Start, Apple Car Play/Android Auto and even 2-Position Memory Seating. Now, you probably already knew that.

But here’s something you maybe didn’t know…the Hybrid model has a combined Horsepower (2.0-litre Atkinson Style 4 cylinder gas powered motor & the Hybrid Electric Motor) of 212hp compared to the V6 Touring with a Horsepower rating of 278hp. But what about the torque? Hybrid has a combined torque output of 361 lb-ft. from 0-4000rpm. Electric motor outputs 232 lb-ft from 0-2000rpm and the 2.0 litre engine puts out 129 @ 4000rpm. The V6 Touring has a peak torque of 252 lb-ft @ 4900rpm. This means you would need to rev higher for longer to get increased acceleration from the V6. This means the Hybrid will receive more torque at lower RPMs, for a more immediate rate of acceleration.

The biggest difference would obviously be fuel efficiency. V6 Touring has a combined City/Highway average consumption of 9.5L/100km. The Hybrid has a combined efficiency of 5.0L/100km. That’s almost HALF of what the V6 Model provides. What does that mean at the gas pump? A potential savings of $837 per year ($1767 vs $930). Based on the calculations from the Natural Resources Canada Fuel Consumption Guide for 2017.

So, you’re now likely thinking, “Yeah, but you have to pay a premium to get Hybrid Technology”; And, you would be right. But here’s the thing, the MSRP for the V6 Touring is $38,185 incl Freight & PDI. The Hybrid Touring is $39,095 incl Freight & PDI. That’s only a difference of $910. Based on the fuel savings of $837 annually, you will have paid that back in 1.07 years of ownership, just from the fuel savings alone!

How about some additional math for you? (if you’re into that kind of thing) A four year lease on the V6 comes to $515 per month. The Hybrid comes to $518 per month. A paltry $3 per month, less than a Macchiato at Starbucks. So if you’re thinking of buying a 2017 Honda Accord and are leaning toward the V6, give the Hybrid a thought. You might be surprised what you find. Below is a brief comparison chart to highlight some differences, for a full comparison head to:
